Every honest argument against streaks has to open by admitting they work. Nobody ships them by accident.
The trade nobody names
Streaks are visible, gamifiable, and genuinely effective.
They lift retention. They make a graph go up. Removing them costs something real, and pretending otherwise would make this an easy position instead of a chosen one.
They work by adding a second problem.
You arrived anxious. Now you are anxious and also anxious about a number. The tool has handed you one more thing to protect, and protecting it is not why you came.
Day 41 is the tell.
On the day you are too flattened to do the thing, does the design make returning cheaper or more expensive? A chain makes coming back a confession, on a day when a rest day should read as a zero dose. That is the day the metric and the person want opposite outcomes.
The line
A tool that helps you should leave you needing it less.
Relief is not behind a wall. Insight is not homework. Across ilyth, keiko, and damngoal that rules out several of the most reliable growth tactics available, deliberately.
Distraction returns you unchanged. Validation soothes without moving you.
Both are good businesses. Both depend on you staying roughly the same. There is a third thing, and it is slower to show up.
What we watch instead
Whether heaviness dropped. Whether this practice helped this person.
Whether recovery got faster. Whether something that used to be a mood became a nameable pattern. Quieter signals, all of them, and terrain rather than a score.
The hook is the honest part.
Something has to bring you back on a bad night. What it must not become is the reason you cannot leave.
