The hijack is the lesson

In a calm hour you can describe your temper. Mid-hijack you can watch it. That is the difference between knowing about yourself and catching yourself.

Dark rocks seen from above, surrounded by churning white surf
the spike becomes the lesson

People do not open a meditation app because they want more content. They open it furious at a coworker, awake at 2am, or staring at a task they cannot start.

Only observable while it runs

A hijack is the one time the pattern is live.

Calm reflection gives you an accurate description of your temper. It does not give you the thing itself. The reaction is only available for inspection while it is happening.

Decision-making is the first thing a hijack takes.

Which is why a library is the wrong shape for this moment. Being asked to browse and choose, mid-spike, is being asked for the one capacity that just went offline.

Sixty to a hundred and eighty seconds of practice

Anger, fear, grief, procrastination, overwhelm — each routes somewhere specific.

One tap, a brief state check, then something short enough to finish while you still want to. That is the length of the practice, not the length of the feeling. Settle the body rather than change the subject.

Then one question, while it is still warm.

Did that help. Two taps, not a journal. A hijack degrades fast in memory — captured at the peak it is evidence, reconstructed on Sunday it is a story you told yourself. The same reason one line written on the day beats a paragraph written later.

What counts as change

Feeling better for two minutes is the easy half.

The hard half is responding differently in June to the thing that wrecked you in March. One is a session. The other is a person moving.

The same trigger keeps arriving until the response shifts.

Every arrival is another rep. The only question is whether anything was learned from the last one.

Nothing about a hijack asks to be wasted.

It is loud, specific, and honest about what destabilizes you. Treated as an interruption it is a bad day. Treated as material it is training — though some of it arrives by delivery, and can be met further upstream.
